Internal link building is fundamental to SEO. Internal links allow search engine crawlers to more easily navigate through your website, indexing information as they go. The better your internal link structure, the better your indexing coverage. When a web crawler comes across a link, they process the anchor text and then follow the link. This process helps them better understand the content on the linking page as well as the linked-to page. When you link to your most important pages in prominent places frequently, you also tell the web crawler that the linked-to page is important to the purpose of your site. Today, we will cover how to plan your internal links for a new blog post, as well as how to update an existing blog post’s internal links for the most strategic approach to internal linking.

Updating an Existing Blog Post

To get started on updating an existing blog post, we’ll use the Onpage Audit tool in the Search Atlas content suite. Here’s how:

  1. Simply type or paste the URL of the blog into the URL field.
  2. Add a keyword or keywords that you want the page to rank for.
  3. Change the location if needed, then click “Run Audit.”

The Onpage Audit tool will automatically generate an SEO report that includes inlinks, where to link from within the blog, and outlinks, which pages on your website should link to the blog that the audit is on for the greatest impact.

Running an SEO Audit

When selecting your new links, make sure to use existing hyperlink text or add hyperlink text that is relevant to the new link.

Integrating Links into Your Content

Incorporating strategic links in your new blogs is easy while creating or optimizing content in the SEO Content Assistant tool. You can integrate links during the writing process or after the article is written.

Quick Link Integration

One way to add links quickly to your optimized blog is to find any of the text that is already highlighted purple. Anything that appears purple has a suggested link. Simply highlight the text, right-click, then select a link from the internal link suggestions list.

Using Link Suggestions

Another easy way to integrate internal links is to use the Link Suggestions menu to identify the best internal links to add into your copy. The tool organizes recommended links by topics or their relevance to your article. When you hover over a link, you will notice that you get a preview of the content, making placement of the link a bit easier. To use the link:

  1. Click “Copy URL.”
  2. Highlight the text you want to add the hyperlink to.
  3. Click the link icon, paste the link, and click “Apply.”

Remember to include about one link for every 1500 words.

Conclusion

Internal linking is a powerful strategy for SEO. With the right tools and approach, it’s easy to optimize your content for better search engine visibility. Happy linking!
